Sweden cost of living for students 2026
Sweden’s price level was 98% of the United States in 2023, so everyday costs sit very close to US levels overall. For students, the biggest budget pressure usually comes from the costs that are not shown by that single number.
Price level, against the United States
98%
A basket of goods costing $100 in the United States costs about $98 in Sweden, at market exchange rates. This is a whole-economy average from the World Bank (2023), not a student budget — rent near a university and a student's own habits move it a long way in both directions.
The price level compares the overall cost of goods and services in Sweden with the United States. At 98%, Sweden was slightly below the US level in 2023, but that measure does not tell you how much a student will spend on the largest budget items on their own.
Sweden has 36 universities, including KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Lund University, Chalmers University of Technology, Uppsala University, Stockholm University and Dalarna University College. Student life is concentrated in cities such as Stockholm, Lund, Gothenburg and Uppsala, so your budget will depend heavily on where you study and how you live.
For a study budget, the costs that usually move most are housing, food and transport, along with any study-related fees and the required Swedish Residence Permit for Studies. The published price level does not break these out, so it is best used as a broad guide to overall cost pressure rather than a full monthly budget.
Sweden uses SEK, and Swedish and English are both common languages in higher education. If you are deciding whether to move here to study in 2026, the main takeaway is that Sweden is close to the US in overall price level, but your real budget will be shaped by the city, your housing choice and the costs tied to your programme and permit.
