Overview

The National Means Cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme 2026 is offered by the Government of India. It provides partial funding of up to Rs. 12,000 per annum to meritorious students from economically weaker sections. The scheme supports students in high and secondary school, specifically classes IX to XII, to prevent dropouts at class VIII. Eligible students must be Indian nationals studying in Government, Government-aided, or local body schools. Selection is based on a state-level test in class VIII, with renewal criteria for higher classes. Applications are typically made through the respective State or Union Territory education departments.

Eligibility

  • Parental income from all sources must not exceed Rs. 3,50,000 per annum.
  • Minimum 55% marks or equivalent grade in Class VII examination (relaxable by 5% for SC/ST students).
  • Must be a regular student in a Government, Government-aided, or local body school.
  • Students of NVS, KVS, and residential schools are not entitled.
  • Reservation as per State Government norms.

Benefits

  • Scholarship amount of up to Rs. 12,000 per annum.

How to apply

  1. Meet the eligibility criteria including income limit and Class VII marks.
  2. Appear for the state-level selection test at class VIII.
  3. Pass both Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) with at least 40% aggregate (32% for SC/ST).
  4. For renewal, secure minimum 60% marks in Class X (relaxable by 5% for SC/ST) and clear promotion from IX to X and XI to XII on first attempt.

Please note: scholarship values, the number of awards, eligibility and deadlines change from year to year and are indicative here. Always confirm the current details on the official provider or university website before applying, and beware of any third party asking for payment to “secure” a scholarship.
