Malaysia Cost of Living for Students 2026
Malaysia’s published price level was 37% of the United States in 2023, so everyday spending is generally lower than in the US. That measure helps compare broad living costs, but it does not give a full student budget on its own.
Price level, against the United States
37%
A basket of goods costing $100 in the United States costs about $37 in Malaysia, at market exchange rates. This is a whole-economy average from the World Bank (2023), not a student budget — rent near a university and a student's own habits move it a long way in both directions.
For a student, the biggest budget pressures are usually the costs that make up daily life: housing, food, getting around, and any course-related spending. The published price level shows the overall price environment, not a line-by-line budget for those items.
Malaysia has 152 universities, including Universiti Malaya, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and Asia E University. Student life is spread across Kuala Lumpur, Bangi, Serdang, Penang, and Johor Bahru, so where you study can shape how much you spend.
The price level figure is useful because it gives a simple comparison with the US: 37% suggests Malaysia is much cheaper overall. It does not cover how much a student will pay in a specific city, at a specific university, or in a particular lifestyle.
Malaysia uses MYR, and study options are available in Malay and English. Students planning a move also need to account for visa and administrative costs tied to the Malaysia Student Visa, which can affect the budget even when everyday prices are lower than in the US.
