Study in China 2026: Student Life Guide
China has 398 universities, including Peking University, Fudan University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Sun Yat-Sen University. New international students should expect to use both Chinese and English in daily life and on campus, especially in major student cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou.
The academic year in China varies by university, but the country has a large higher-education system and well-known institutions spread across major cities. If you are choosing where to study, Beijing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou are among the main student centres to look at.
Language in daily life is usually a mix of Chinese and English, especially around universities that work with international students. In class, administration, and housing searches, you may find both languages used, but Chinese is still important for everyday errands and local services.
Housing is usually part of the first practical step after arrival. Many students look for accommodation near their university or in one of the main student cities, and early term is often spent sorting out where to live, how to get around, and how to handle routine tasks in Chinese or English.
For a new international student, the first term is mostly about settling into campus life, understanding local systems, and adjusting to how things work in a country using CNY. China’s price level in 2023 was 62% of the United States level, which helps frame everyday costs when planning a move.
