Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF) by Ministry of Education, Govt of India — Fellowship scholarship for Indian students

Overview

A flagship fellowship for direct PhD admission at IITs, IISc and IISERs with one of the most generous research stipends in India.

The Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF) is a flagship scheme of the Ministry of Education designed to attract India's brightest students into doctoral research at the country's premier institutes — the IITs, IISc, IISERs, NITs and select central universities. It offers one of the most generous research stipends in India, aiming to reverse the brain drain by making a home-grown PhD financially and academically competitive with studying abroad.

  • A strong, consistent academic record (typically a CGPA of 8.0 or above on a 10-point scale).
  • Securing admission to a PhD programme at a participating institute, via the direct-entry or lateral-entry channel.
  • Meet the subject-area and institute-specific research requirements.

Benefits

  • Monthly fellowship of ₹70,000 in years 1–2, ₹75,000 in year 3 and ₹80,000 in years 4–5.
