Overview

The John Tapiata Scholarship at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) was established in 1992 to honour John Tapiata, the first Tumuaki of Te Ara Poutama, and his commitment to excellence and Te Reo Māori. Offered by AUT, this scholarship provides NZD 8,000 towards tuition fees for one year of full-time study in Bachelors, Masters, or PhD programmes within Te Ara Poutama. It is open to New Zealand and Australian nationals and permanent residents, and is not available to Indian students. Applicants must be accepted for full-time study in a certificate, diploma, undergraduate, or postgraduate programme within Te Ara Poutama at AUT. The scholarship is tenable only at AUT and cannot be held with another AUT scholarship. To apply, candidates use the AUT online scholarship application system, which opens in July of the application year, and must submit an official transcript, a 1,000-word essay in Te Reo Māori, and nominate one referee for a leadership statement.

Eligibility

  • Applicant must have been accepted for full-time study in a certificate, diploma, undergraduate, or postgraduate degree programme within Te Ara Poutama.
  • Applicant must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.
  • Applicant must obtain a referee's statement supporting their leadership ability from a community leader, group, organisation, or school.

Benefits

  • NZD 8,000 contribution towards tuition fees for one year of full-time study at AUT.
  • One new scholarship is awarded annually.
  • Students studying part-time or taking papers outside Te Ara Poutama may receive a reduced pro-rata contribution for eligible Te Ara Poutama papers.

How to apply

  1. Apply through the AUT online scholarship application system, available from July of the year of application.
  2. Upload an official transcript of academic results for the current and preceding year, unless the study was completed at AUT.
  3. Submit a 1,000-word typed essay in Te Reo Māori outlining career paths, future goals, educational aspirations, and leadership capability.
  4. Nominate one referee through the online system who can provide a statement supporting your leadership ability.

Please note: scholarship values, the number of awards, eligibility and deadlines change from year to year and are indicative here. Always confirm the current details on the official provider or university website before applying, and beware of any third party asking for payment to “secure” a scholarship.
