Post-Study Work Visas Compared: PGWP vs Graduate Route vs 485 vs OPT — guide for Indian students on IndiaScholar

The single biggest factor in whether studying abroad pays off financially is not the ranking of your university — it is how long you can legally work in the country afterwards. Post-study work rights turn an expensive degree into a career and, often, a route to residency. Here is how the four major destinations compare, and what each means for an Indian student.

Canada — Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

Length: up to three years, depending on your programme length. No job offer needed to get it. The PGWP is the gold standard because the work experience counts directly towards Express Entry PR. The catch: your programme and institution must be PGWP-eligible, and some college programmes now require field-of-study alignment with in-demand occupations.

United Kingdom — Graduate Route

Length: two years after a Bachelor's or Master's, three after a PhD. No sponsorship or job offer required to switch onto it. It is simple and open, but it does not itself lead to settlement — you must move onto a sponsored Skilled Worker visa to work towards Indefinite Leave to Remain.

Australia — Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485)

Length: varies by qualification and can be longer for regional study. It gives full work rights and feeds into the points-based skilled migration system. Your occupation being on the skilled lists matters a great deal for the PR step that follows.

USA — Optional Practical Training (OPT)

Length: 12 months for most fields, plus a 24-month STEM OPT extension — so up to three years for STEM graduates. OPT is tied to your field of study and to employer sponsorship for what comes next (typically the H-1B lottery). It offers the highest salaries but the least certainty, because the H-1B is a lottery.

How to read the comparison

If certainty and a clear PR route matter most, Canada and Australia lead. If you want a simple, open work window at a globally-respected university, the UK's Graduate Route is attractive. If you are in a STEM field chasing the highest salaries and are comfortable with the H-1B lottery risk, the US OPT + STEM OPT route is powerful. There is no single best answer — it depends on your field, your risk appetite and whether PR is your goal.

Key takeaways

  • Canada PGWP: up to 3 years, counts towards PR — but check programme eligibility.
  • UK Graduate Route: 2 years (3 for PhD), open but needs a Skilled Worker switch for settlement.
  • Australia 485: length varies, feeds points-based PR — occupation lists matter.
  • US OPT: 12 months, +24 for STEM, but the next step is the H-1B lottery.
  • Choose based on your field, risk appetite and whether PR is the goal.
